APPROACHING A BIBLICAL PASSAGE OR NARRATIVE

  1. Listen to it offered in the best possible way. (if alone, experience yourself speaking it aloud)
  2. Try to give it a new name (apart from the familiar one)
  3. Try to say how it affects me (no matter what the effect)
  4. Try to say what word, phrase, or other aspect struck me.
  5. Indicate the images that occur (e.g. Tree, birth, saliva, robe, stairway etc.)
  6. What other biblical images/ characters come to me in this moment.
  7. What situations in my life am I reminded of.
  8. Which character in the passage do I empathise with (or not)
  9. What strength or other resource am I being offered.
  10. Make up a short prayer that links it with my life.
  11. Will I be able to relate the story etc. Later (e.g. In the family)
  12. Silently (or aloud) thank the one who presented the story.
